How We Verify Providers
Our uncompromising, independent methodology for auditing online weight loss clinics and pharmacies in the UK.
A price comparison is only useful if every provider on the list is genuinely safe to use. Before any clinic or pharmacy appears in our directory, it is put through a four-pillar audit covering its regulatory registration, its clinical process, the people writing the prescriptions, and the website itself. Every pillar has to pass. None of them are optional.
1. GPhC Registry Check
Every pharmacy claiming to dispense prescription weight loss medication must hold an active registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). We look up each provider’s registration number directly on the official GPhC register and confirm the registration is current, not lapsed, suspended, or pending review. A listing is not created until this number has been checked against the live register, not just taken from the provider’s own website.
2. Clinical Assessment Standards
Prescription weight loss medication is not an over-the-counter product, and a provider’s checkout process has to reflect that. We test each provider’s own patient journey and reject any clinic that lets a customer reach a prescription-only medicine through a simple “add to cart” flow. A genuine medical consultation, or a stringent, clinically-reviewed questionnaire covering medical history, current medication, and contraindications, must sit between browsing and receiving a prescription.
3. Prescriber Credentials
A pharmacy can be fully registered while the clinician actually issuing the prescription is not who they claim to be. We confirm that the prescribers working with each listed provider hold current, verifiable registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) for doctors, or the GPhC for independent pharmacist prescribers. Where a provider will not name or evidence its prescribing clinicians, it does not make the list.
4. Anti-Spoofing & Domain Verification
Clone sites are one of the most common ways patients are defrauded of money or personal medical information. For every provider we check that the official EU/UK common logo for online pharmacies is present and links through to the correct entry on the regulator’s register, and that the domain in that register matches the domain the provider actually trades from. Any mismatch, missing logo, or unverifiable link is treated as a failed check, not a minor issue.
Our zero tolerance policy
Verification is not a one-off event. If a provider’s GPhC or GMC registration is suspended, lapsed, or restricted at any point, or if we find that its clinical standards have been quietly lowered since our last check, it is removed from PenCompare immediately. There is no grace period and no partial listing. A provider is either fully compliant across all four pillars, or it is not listed at all.
