What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription injectable medicine specifically approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.

Mechanism of Action

Wegovy belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake.

  • Increases feelings of fullness
  • Reduces hunger and cravings
  • Helps control calorie intake

Effectiveness

In a 68-week medical study of 1,961 adults living with obesity or excess weight with a related medical problem, adults lost an average of ~15% of their body weight while taking Wegovy, compared to ~2.4% for the placebo group.

How to Use

Wegovy comes in a pre-filled pen that you inject yourself once a week. The injection is typically given under the skin (subcutaneously) in your stomach, thigh, or upper arm.

Dosing Escalation

To reduce the likelihood of stomach side effects, you start at a low dose of 0.25 mg once a week and increase the dose every 4 weeks until you reach the full maintenance dose of 2.4 mg.

Key Difference from Ozempic

While both Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide), Wegovy is specifically approved for weight loss and goes up to a higher maximum dose (2.4 mg) compared to Ozempic (typically up to 2.0 mg for diabetes).
