Eligibility Criteria
Prescription weight loss injections are not for cosmetic weight loss. They are medical treatments designed for individuals with obesity or overweight who face health risks due to their weight.
Standard BMI Requirements
Most licensed providers and regulatory guidelines follow these Body Mass Index (BMI) criteria for prescribing medications like Wegovy or Saxenda:
- BMI of 30 or higher: Categorized as obesity. You typically qualify based on BMI alone.
- BMI of 27 to 29.9: Categorized as overweight. You typically qualify ONLY if you also have at least one weight-related health condition.
Weight-Related Conditions
If your BMI is between 27 and 30, you generally need a co-morbidity to be eligible. Common qualifying conditions include:
- High blood pressure (Hypertension)
- High cholesterol (Dyslipidemia)
- Type 2 Diabetes or Pre-diabetes
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Who Should NOT Take Them
Even if you meet the BMI criteria, these medications may not be safe for everyone. Contraindications typically include:
- Personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC)
- Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- History of pancreatitis
- Severe kidney or liver disease
Consultation is Mandatory
You cannot buy these medications over the counter. A consultation with a licensed healthcare professional is required to review your medical history, current medications, and suitability for treatment.
