What is Liraglutide?
Liraglutide is the active ingredient in Saxenda (for weight loss) and Victoza (for type 2 diabetes).
How It Works
Liraglutide belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is 97% similar to the natural human GLP-1 hormone. It works by:
- Regulating appetite in the brain
- Slowing down gastric emptying
- Increasing insulin release when blood sugar is high
Dosage
Unlike newer GLP-1 agonists which are injected weekly, Liraglutide requires a daily injection. The typical maintenance dose for weight loss is 3.0mg per day.
Vs Semaglutide
While effective, Liraglutide generally produces less weight loss than Semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic) and requires more frequent administration. However, it remains an important option for patients who cannot tolerate Semaglutide or prefer a daily regimen that clears the system faster.
